This is me – Cathy Simmons, and over the years I have worked with many people to help them get free of the smoking completely and permanently and anyone who knows me will tell you how passionate I am about this.
I have been constantly searching for more understanding of the nature of addiction generally, and nicotine addiction in particular with a view to developing an approach which is even more effective and permanent for smokers to get free, and this led to the development of The Simmons Method™, a framework for working with smokers for complete and permanent change, based on our current understanding of how addiction works in our brains and bodies.
Addictions are complicated! While the debate over whether it is just a matter of choice, or whether it is a disease, continues to heat up, we could simply say that it is a disease of choice, or, indeed, a disease of pleasure.
There are many factors that contribute to how it can start and what keeps it in place. Factors such as genetics play a part, and other systems in our central nervous system, such as our reward system, our memory and learning mechanisms and our stress system all have a part to play. The interaction between the parts of our brain that keep us safe (our automatic survival systems) and the part that has choice and exerts executive control (willpower), is somehow compromised and these parts no longer work together in a balanced way.
For a more in-depth explanation of what is going on in the brain, please see ‘Nicotine Addiction & the Brain: what’s going on?’
Of course we are more than just brains and systems! For example, stress, either short term or chronic and inescapable stressors can actually change our susceptibility to addiction and our sensitivity to the triggers. Another example is that having meaning and purpose in our lives can also change the landscape of the addicted brain. It’s not straight-forward is it?
THE SIMMONS METHOD™ takes all of the factors into consideration and addresses each and every one of them in a very gentle way, tailored specifically for each individual – because we are all different.
I have taught over 100 Simmons Method™ trained therapists who are spread across the UK, and my aim is to get this out there to help more people across the world get free of the smoking for good!
